Enjoy the beginning of the fall season when you head to one of the state parks by our apartments near UNL. With exciting activities, like hiking, bird watching, and rock climbing, you'll be surrounded by towering trees and picturesque scenery.
Our three favorite state parks include:
Nestled halfway between Lincoln and Omaha, Platte River State Park welcomes both daytime visitors and overnight campers. Vintage cabins provide cozy accommodations while new "glamping" cabins offer a luxurious and nature-immersive experience. Crawdad Creek runs through the park, and hikers can witness the stunning views along the miles of trails. The park also offers fishing, paddle boating, and guided horseback rides.
Established in 1857, Rock Creek Station was once a stage and Pony Express station. The deep ruts, made by the wagons traveling the Oregon and California Trails, remain visible. Rock Creek Station became a park in the 1980s, and archaeologists excavated two cabins in search of artifacts. Several of the property's original buildings have been reconstructed, including the Pony Express barn. Reenactors offer a seasonal calendar of living history demonstrations while the hiking trails are open for daily exploration.
With indoor and outdoor activities, Eugene T. Mahoney is one of the most popular state parks. Visitors can hike, climb the observation tower, and bring out their adventurous side on the Go Ape ropes course. Those looking for an overnight getaway can stay in the Peter Kiewit Lodge. Called the park's crown jewel, it overlooks the Platte River Valley.
Venture Climb is another popular attraction. This state-of-the-art facility features a forty-two-foot climbing wall with auto and top-rope belays. Climbers enjoy landscape views, and all skill levels can join in the fun. There is no time limit, and personal equipment may be used.
